As it was, what could she do? Should she do anything? Were she to tell Esther anything, would not it seem spiteful and envious and nothing more? Would it not, possibly, spoil the happiness of a strong-willed girl who had energy enough to keep any two such husbands straight and respectable? Why not? On the Friday she started early for the post-office. It so happened that the morning of this Friday was the morning of which there was some talk a few pages back, where a band of men--Moreton, Bill, Chippy, and others--seemed about to attack a stage-coach. That was, in fact, what they were about to do. Quite unconscious, however, of the excitement or danger through which her friend had been passing in the attacked stage, Susy still went early to the post-office because of her eagerness. Once there, she felt obliged to pay for her room by talking with the clerk. The post-office was in a drug-store--clean and quiet, with its smell of soap and pleasant medicines, like all wellkept drug-stores. Around the edges of the gaudy window-bottles one caught glimpses of out-of-doors which seemed very pearly and unreal beside them. To Susy there was something well-bred and bewitchingly civilized about this place, with its rows of shining glass jars all alike, their Latin names printed in gold.
